For the past two days, the Peterses have awoken to the sound of a woodpecker pecking on the chimney rain cover. As you may guess, the cover is not made of wood, so I'm not sure why this bird enjoys pecking on it so much. I had to light a fire in fireplace to get him to leave. Anyone have any ideas on how to discourage a woodpecker who likes metal?

Funny, that was Becca's comment too. Although she said, "scare" it with a bb gun. Being the dead-eye that I am, it would be scared dead. I commented that standing in the road with a gun may attract unwanted attention. Shooting from the backyard into the park would probably be a bad idea as well. Perhaps hooking a car battery up the the rain cap would be a better idea.
The battery would be more fun but more complicated. Shooting into the park would be OK if you could also get the guy who cleans turkeys at Thanksgiving
Have cartoons taught us nothing?, there is no way you can outsmart a woodpecker.
